Black Swan (2010) dir. Darren Aronofsky
Black Swan by Darren Aronofsky is one of my favorite films of the year. It has this frenzied, frantic, surreal style that I just love. This is the same fast-paced intensity we saw in Pi and in parts of Requiem for a Dream.
Black Swan isn't quite a traditional story and not quite a music video either. It's well, a ballet.
Portman plays a ballerina under a lot of pressure and she has sort of the same de-personalized, depressed anxiety we've seen portrayed by male actors in classics like Taxi Driver and Fight Club. Black Swan takes this same insanity - this same feeling of violent, sexual chaos and puts it in a uniquely female context.
Black Swan is probably not going to win Best Picture at this year's Oscars, but Natalie Portman is considered a lock for Best Actress.
